Katrina has been slowly developing this piece over the past five years. The idea began when she and Joey Largent acquired a large amount of branches of vine maple, purple smoke, and red-leaf cherry trees from a gardening job. These branches—with the addition of many more vine maple branches found in an alley in the University District some years later—have already been used in multiple performances/installations, and have been moved throughout Studio Ma many times over the years.

But the vision has always been growing to present a durational performance during which the branches are slowly broken down and eventually returned to the earth. This piece will take place in four parts, during which the installation will be altered within and between each performance, creating a new visual experience as the piece progresses.

Sound artists Michael Shannon and David Stanford will enhance the transformation of the installation by creating a distinctly unique soundscape for each evening of the performance series. Katrina’s movement will be a holistic and open response to her tactile interaction with the materials of the installation, to the sounds created by Micheal and David, to the sounds of the materials themselves, and to the energy of the audience. Beyond this, the theme of these performances will be non-intentional. Further details about this performance series will be shared in the February newsletter.
